- “It's strange...Sometimes I don't remember my dreams, though I'm sure I saw them. Where do these dreams go? But I remember this dream as clear as if it were reflected in a mirror...”
- —Mysterious voice, in Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (PS1)
- “Don't you think it's kind of strange? How sometimes when you wake up, you know you had a dream, but you can't remember it. Where do you suppose those dreams go? But there's one dream I remember very clearly, as if it was happening right now.”
- —Klonoa, in Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (Wii)
Phantomile (ファントマイル, Fantomairu) is the world where Klonoa: Door to Phantomile, its Wii remake, and its remaster takes place. In legend, it is a mysterious place that is fueled by the very dreams people have at night. As a result, no one can clearly remember the dreams they've had, even if they occurred recently.
History
Once upon a time, four spirits ruled over Phantomile: the Wind Spirit, the Tree Spirit, the Water Spirit, and the Moon Spirit. The Moon Spirit gathered the energy from people's dreams and used this energy to shape the world. The other Spirits maintained peace in the world by sharing the special powers of the wind, trees and water that were entrusted to each of them. One day, the Dark Spirit started a rebellion. He was jealous of the omnipotent power of the Moon Spirit to create anything in the universe. The Spirits combined their strength and battled the Dark Spirit. Although the Dark Spirit's awesome might overwhelmed the other spirits at first, he was eventually overcome and hunted down by the forces of light. The war raged on for 100 days and the Dark Spirit was imprisoned at the end of the war.
After the war, the Moon Spirit decided to disappear so that a war like this would never happen again in the future. Now, the Moon Spirit will not appear unless Wind Spirit, the Tree Spirit, and the Water Spirit all will the Spirit to come forth. Thus, the power of dreams is forever hidden, far away in the land of dreams.[1]
